For more than 100 years, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has provided support, information and resources to families focused on the health and education of children. The association was founded in 1897 in Washington DC as the National Congress of Mothers by Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst. If not for these women and their vision and determination, there would not be a PTA - an association that has been woven into the very fabric of American life.
By whatever name it has been known, National PTA was created to meet a profound challenge to better the lives of children. And today, it continues to flourish because PTA has never lost sight of its goal to change the lives of children across our great nation for the better.
I encourage to visit www.pta.org and read about the rich history of our association. You will be amazed at the vital role PTA has played throughout the years in making a difference for children and families by using our collective voices to advocate for children and families.
Advocating for children and families is just as important today as it was over 100 years ago when PTA was founded. Thank you for being a part of helping to make the PTA vision of "making every child's potential a reality" come true.

Greetings PTA Leaders,
I'm fowarding a note from NCPTA about their upcoming Emerging Leaders Conference on February 6th at Wake Tech, right here in Wake County. Several members of the Wake PTA Council Board are planning to attend (myself included) are planning to attend the conference, and we hope that you will join us for this exciting time to further learn about parent involvement and the importance of diversity and inclusion in our PTAs. This event is a great one for any seasoned or emerging PTA leader to attend.

Good Afternoon PTA Leaders,
Several of you have contacted Wake PTA Council of late questioning what's happening with the WCPSS Board of Education (BOE) and how your PTA can be involved and learn more. I've heard from a lot of folks on the matter of last week's School Board meeting and what transpired there - some of you seem to be fully in support of decisions that were made there; others seem to be very much opposed to the decisions that were made there. Regardless of how you feel about the issues with which the BOE is wrestling, I want to encourage you to stay informed, stay involved, and keep current with discussions being held there.
One way to keep yourself educated about happenings in this area is to attend BOE meetings, which happen two Tuesday afternoons/evenings per month at 3600 Wake Forest Road. The meetings are open to the public. The next meeting is Tuesday, December 15th, at 3pm in the Board Room. These meetings are also broadcast over local television at "off-hours." You would need to check your local listings if you are interested in finding out more about how to see the meetings on televisions. The times are different for Raleigh and Cary, dependent on where your television service originates.
Also, if you are interested in speaking at a Board Meeting about your opinions on a matter, you may sign up prior to the start of the meeting for a three-minute period to address the Board in its entirety. Generally, the public comment period begins at 4pm, but you must sign up to speak prior to the beginning of the meeting at 3pm. During the time that you speak, you are allowed to use the overhead projector to show documents on the screen if you so desire. I have received a lot of questions about this, so I wanted to make sure that you are aware that your voice can be heard - regardless of whether you are "for" or "against" an action of the Board. Speakers are generally taken in the order that they sign up, although those that are addressing matters on the posted Board agenda are heard prior to those that are addressing non-agenda matters. Also, it is important to note that personnel matters are not appropriate for discussion during your remarks.
You may keep up with the schedule of Board meetings, Board committee meetings, and Board Advisory Committee meetings by visiting www.wcpss.net and clicking on "Board of Education" in the second gray box on the left side of the webpage. From this site, you'll see a link to the calendar of meetings on the righthand side of the page. This main BOE page also gives good information on how to contact Board members, including their e-mail addresses if you wish to send them a note expressing support or concern about any matter they are undertaking.
Additionally, you may be interested in reading and/or subscribing to one or all four of the e-newsletters distributed by the school system's Communications department. You may check that out by visiting www.wcpss.net and clicking on "Sign-up for e-news and the Notification System" on the top box on the left hand side of the screen. You might also be interested in reading or subscribing to the e-newsletter distributed by Wake Education Partnership. This newsletter, called "In Context," gives a summary of current happenings with the school system and school board. The most recent copy of the newsletter, dated December 3, 2009, covered in some detail the various actions taken by the Board of Education on December 1st. It can be found here: http://www.wakeedpa rtnership. org/In%20Context %2012.03. 09.html, and at the bottom of the page, you can see contact information for Tim Simmons, Communications VP for the Wake Education Partnership.
Please encourage your PTA membership to stay informed about our school system. If you have other questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail the Council at wakeptacouncil@ wcpss.net . Please note that we certainly do not have all the answers, but we can try to help direct you as to where to look for answers if necessary.
All best wishes, |

Dear Officers and PTA Members,
Attached is a lovely ceremonial script taken from the Girl Scouts which
was adapted to PTA. Someone shared this with me, and I wanted to share
it with you as a way to say "Thank You" for your dedication and service
to the children and youth of NC.
It reads:
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....children will feel the pride of being someone special
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....a child can move to a new town and have "instant friendships" with other children he/she might never have met
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....parents will experience that special pride when they listen to
their children talk about what the PTA provided them that day
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....lifelong friendships may be made in your PTA community providing support & love throughout many lives
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....curiosity will be sparked and maybe a career chosen because of your PTA community
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....you will hear the squeals of laughter as children enjoy the programming of your PTA community
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....strong bodies will be made through sports and adventurous activities
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....strong minds will be made because the children had a safe place to make decisions
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....our future leaders will be developed, strong and decisive.
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....the community and the world will be cleaner because children learned the importance of caring for their environment
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....the community and the world will be richer because children
learned to give service to someone less fortunate than themselves.
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....children will develop greater confidence in themselves and each other, building strong relationships.
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....the world will be a more peaceful place as we all learn to accept and revel in our differences.
Because you said, "Yes". . . . .
.....an adult will contact a PTA one day and say "I had so much fun
when I was a child because of PTA, I'd like to become a PTA leader" And
the circle will continue.....Because you said Yes
Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

Good Evening PTA Leaders,
As a quick reminder, the online registration and mail-in registration
for the Wake PTA Healthy Lifestyles 5k Run/Walk 2009 will be closing on
November 18th. After that time, you may only register in person at the
event, rather than using the online registration form.
Also, please note that the race director will be sending race
instructions and volunteer instructions via e-mail sometime late next
week, just prior to the event on the weekend. Please be aware that it
will be of utmost importance for folks to arrive at the event site
early on Sunday to pick up your race packet, etc. In order to have
your timing chip and racing bib, you must be completed with packet pick
up by 3pm. We will include information about this in the racer
instructions, but we cannot overemphasize the importance of moving
through packet pick-up prior to 3pm on race day.
Many thanks for supporting Healthy Lifestyles for families throughout our community!

Good Afternoon PTA Leaders, We're
excited to announce that one of our sponsors for the Wake PTA Healthy
Lifestyles 5k Run/Walk 2009, Shred-it, has agreed to bring one of their
industrial shredding trucks to the site of our Healthy Lifestyles
Run/Walk in November for a free community shredding event. Shred-it
will provide this document shredding service free of charge at our
event, and they will recycle all shredded paper in an effort to help
our environment. For more information about Shred-it, see their
website at www.shredit.com/greensboroStart
thinking now if you have personal, business, or even PTA unit documents
that you might want to have shredded this fall. Bring them out to the
race site on November 22nd, and you can have them shredded and disposed
of (recycled) free of charge! Also, as a reminder, you can view the
PTA Records Retention Schedule on page 25 (Appendix 4) of the NCPTA's
Dollars and Sense Guide. If your PTA unit is in need of document
disposal, this free shredding event might make a good chance for you to
get that taken care of. Please feel free to advertise to your school
community that they can participate in this free community shredding
event on November 22nd. Shred-it recently held three
simultaneous community shredding events here in Wake County and
shredded over 60,000 pounds of paper - enough recycled paper to save
331 trees from making their way to the paper mill. We're excited to
offer this additional community benefit as part of our Wake PTA Healthy
Lifestyles 5k Run/Walk event this year. Don't forget to share this
news with your school community! And don't forget that race registration is ongoing at www.pta5k.org.
Earlybird registration ends on 11/8/09. After that time, registration
prices increase, and there is no guarantee that racers and/or
volunteers registering after that date will receive a race t-shirt. Happy Shredding! Sarah Martin Wake PTA Council President, 2008-2010 |
