PTA Committees

2017-18 Committees

Please contact a committee chair if you're interested in volunteering with the group. All are welcome and the your help is always appreciated!  


Bulletin Board - Leanne Schaffhauser

Updates the PTA Bulletin board in the main lobby several times per month.

Carpool Sign - Leanne Schaffhauser

Update the carpool sign several times per month. Must be creative, have neat lettering or graphic skills and must be available to keep the sign up to date with current events and dates.

PTA Closet Manager - OPEN

Responsible for keeping the PTA storage closet (second grade hallway) organized. The person will get supplies out and put them away after events, straighten up, assist event chairs with locating items and maintain an inventory. This person needs to be available during the school day and needs to work in the closet weekly. This person should be familiar with all of the contents of the closet.

Yearbook Committee - Karen Boyne,

Coordinates the annually printed Conn Yearbook. Responsibilities include collecting photos, content and more for the yearbook, working with yearbook vendor, selling yearbook, collecting money, and distributing yearbooks. Typically, a "Popsicles in the Park" event is held in conjunction with yearbook distribution.


Audit Committee - Holly Atkins,

Performs semiannual audits. Reports to the PTA Board and Association and forwards audit report with financial statements to NCPTA.

Mini Grants Committee -  Jessica Herrmann & Julia Kirkpatrick

Responsible for reviewing and awarding teacher applications for mini grants twice per year.


All For Conn Committee - Leanne

Coordinate All for Conn fundraising efforts during the month of October.

All For Conn Silent Auction -

Coordinate All for Conn silent auction effort, typically held in tandem with CONNival.

Community Night Dinners - Minita Little,

Coordinate community night dinners at various restaurants throughout the year.

CONNival - OPEN,

Coordinate the annual Connival event, typically held in the spring.

Passive Fundraising Committee - Margaret Feno,

Oversees passive fundraisers, including "Boxtops for Education" and various shoppers card programs. Boxtop work involves collecting labels from the school, counting them, filling out necessary paperwork and sending labels in. Works with VP Communications and committee members to promote events and communicate with parents.

School Merchandise - OPEN

Plans and coordinates the sale of the school's branded merchandise. This involves developing a working relationship with vendors, setting prices, developing flyers, collecting money and distributing merchandise. It is also necessary to attend various school events to sell merchandise.


Advocacy & Outreach - Heather Hall,

The NC PTA describes advocacy as, “a constitutional right and a proud American tradition. It’s the most important opportunity, after voting, that Americans have to be involved in their government.” In fact, securing adequate laws for the care and protection of our children is one of PTA’s greatest purposes (

The NC PTA has established advocacy priorities to help guide our school PTA in our advocacy work. These priorities include advocating for school funding, teachers and administrators, parental involvement, accountability, and health and wellness. Nominating Committee - Selina Schroer,

The Nominating Committee works in the spring to identify a slate of nominees for the PTA Board. The committee must be comprised of at least 5 people, with an odd number of people serving on the committee. The slate must be presented to the general membership for voting at the last meeting of the school year. The nominating committee also gathers names of individuals interested in committee chairs, event chair, and other PTA leadership positions.


Family Fun Night Committee - OPEN,

The Family Fun Night Committee is responsible for organizing a fun  community outreach event that usually includes family board games and is typically held in the fall. Also responsible for ordering food and drinks for the event.

Book Fair Committee - Katy Irving & Julia Kirkpatrick,

Works closely with Conn's media specialist to coordinate the annual Scholastic Book Fair. Recruits and oversees volunteers, directspublicity, counts money collected and helps out during fair. Flexibility to be on site during some or all of the fair days (typically one week in November) is a definite plus. This is a popular event with lots of volunteer support from the Conn community.

Cultural Arts Committee - Jill Leandro & Selina Schroer,

The Cultural Arts Committee arranges performances and workshops by artists, musicians, and writers who come to Conn and recruits volunteers as necessary to help in the classroom during these special visits. Also involves working with United Arts, a nonprofit located in downtown Raleigh. United Arts holds two events in August that the Cultural Arts chair must attend. Most of the work for this position happens before the early October deadline for funding applications.

Green Team (Landscaping) - Stephanie Lormand,

Coordinates several dates throughout the year for volunteers to come to school and help beautify the Conn grounds with other parents and students! Involves planting flowers and weeding flower beds....including the butterfly garden which is is adjacent to the parking lot up the hill next to the second grade classrooms. Volunteers Always Needed!

Hospitality/Teacher Appreciation Committee - Amanda Gaddy,

Coordinates events that demonstrate our appreciation to the incredible staff at the school. This committee spearheads staff meeting snacks, luncheons, and Teacher Appreciation Week. Anyone who values the contribution that the teachers and staff offer the children would love to be a part of this committee.

KinderCONN Committee - Leanne Schaffhauser and Kristin Struchen

Coordinates KinderCONN summer playdates for rising kindergarteners. Typically there are 4 playdates held at various local parks. Committee members may also be asked to represent the PTA at Kindergarten events.

Media Center Liaison - Katy Irving,

Serves as liaison betweein Conn's media specialist and the PTA, advocating for media center needs and promoting volunteer opportunities.

PBIS / Conscious Discipline - Brittany Notch, Heather Dominique, Lindsay Blackburn

Works directly with Conn faculty to support positive behavior systems. Pops popcorn, serves Royal Lunches! Cut out Conn Care's Tickets! If you're interested in doing jobs from small to large, either at home or at school, volunteer with this committee! Volunteers Needed

Popsicles on the Playground - Selina Schroer

Coordinates two Popsicles in the Park events, one at the beginning of the year and one at the end of of the year in conjunction with yearbook distribution. Responsible for organizing a location (typically Lion's Park or Halifax Park), organzing volunteers, and acquisition of popsicles.

Reflections - Katie Sabino,

Coordinates Conn's participation in the National PTA's Reflections art contest. Work closely with the Wake County PTA to collect entries, judge and submit entries to the next level of competition. Create flyers and bulletin boards with the Art Reflections theme and information. Copy and send home information about the program. Organize a breakfast for the participants and Mrs. Brown. Present participants with a certificate and prize.

School Improvement Team Reps - Russell Gorga, OPEN

Four PTA members responsible for representing the PTA at School Improvement Team meetings organized by school administration. Reports findings at PTA meetings and advocates for PTA at meetings.

Volunteer Coordinator - Dina Lumia,

The volunteer coordinator contacts poeple who are interested in volunteering and sets up online volunteer Sign Up Geniuses for all PTA events.

Walk / Bike to School Day - Maggie Fyfe

Coordinates the Walk to School Day with school administration, Temple Baptist Church, local media and others.

Wellness Committee - Dina Lumia & Heather Dominque

Coordinates health and wellness initiatives throughout the year.

Winter Dance Committee - Jessica Herrmann

Coordinates winter dance, typically held in February. Responsible for organizing tickets, music, food, and decorations.
